Send the documents [+36 70 755 5705](tel:+36707555705) What you need to know - For a fully electric vehicle the registration tax is 0 Ft, and it is exempt from the transfer duty too. - It comes with a green plate, and the full inspection fee is lower too: 47,700 Ft instead of 57,300 Ft for M1. - The CoC contains the range and the electric drivetrain data — the authority requires this. - For a fully electric passenger car the identity check is 22,950 Ft. These are basic official fees. On top come our service fee and, for a priority case, its fee. ## Send us the documents As a private individual - ID card or passport - address card or residence permit - tax card or tax number - both sides of the driving licence, if you have one - phone number As a company - specimen signature - stored company extract - phone number For the vehicle - foreign registration certificate and vehicle title (Poland, Italy, Czech Republic: single-document countries) - a bilingual sales contract — unless the registration certificate shows the vehicle has been yours for at least six months - invoice — mandatory if bought from a company - COC (Certificate of Conformity), ha megvan - a valid or expired foreign inspection report (TÜV, DEKRA, RDW), if you have one - export de-registration certificate — for the Netherlands and Italy In detail When is a car new for VAT purposes? 6 months OR 6,000 km Four examples The two categories that must not be confused VAT rules for a new means of transport bought in the EU Can a CoC expire? ## When is a car new for VAT purposes? 6 months OR 6,000 km For VAT purposes a vehicle is **new** if it is less than 6 months old **OR** has covered less than 6,000 km. The two are linked by **or** . It follows that for a car to count as **used** for VAT purposes, it must be more than 6 months old **and** have covered more than 6,000 km. One condition failing is enough for the vehicle to count as new. ## Four examples | Age | Mileage | for VAT purposes | | --- | --- | --- | | three months old | 18,000 km | **NEW** | | two years old | 4,500 km | **NEW** | | five months old | 5,000 km | **NEW** | | ten months old | 8,000 km | USED | The second line matters most A **two-year-old car with 4,500 km** is new for VAT purposes — which defies common sense, and is exactly the surprise customers hit most often. A two-year-old car with German papers can also be a new means of transport for VAT. ## The two categories that must not be confused | | Brand new, never registered | Registered abroad but new for VAT purposes | | --- | --- | --- | | Foreign registration certificate | nincs | exists (e.g. German) | | Core document | CoC + invoice | foreign registration certificate + invoice | | Name of the procedure | first registration in Hungary | registration | | Why new | it has never been registered anywhere | under 6 months OR under 6,000 km | Having foreign registration papers therefore **does not mean** the car is used for VAT purposes. ## VAT rules for a new means of transport bought in the EU Special EU VAT rules apply to a **new means of transport** bought within the EU — **including for a private buyer** . This is the exception to the usual “private individuals need not worry about VAT” logic. So when buying a vehicle less than 6 months old or under 6,000 km, the **invoice and the VAT treatment must be checked separately** . If that is missed at purchase, sorting it out afterwards is far more unpleasant. ## Can a CoC expire? A certificate of conformity does not expire on a given day — but the **status** of the vehicle’s type approval and its first-registration compliance **can change over time** . This matters for cars built years ago that have sat in stock with 0 km, were never registered and come from old dealer inventory. In such a case the first registration may **no longer be as straightforward** on the basis of the original CoC, and further official, manufacturer or technical documentation may be needed.
