US and UK vehicles ## American and UK vehicles can be classics too With the paid customs decision in hand, a US or British vehicle can come in its original state too — without lamp or other conversions. Classic-car status for European, US and UK vehicles We register classic vehicles from these regions too. Registration tax exemption Classic vehicles are exempt from registration tax. Transfer duty Paying the transfer duty is mandatory. Classic-car licence plate prices These differ from standard plate prices and can only be requested at the central government office. From the pre-check to the classic-car inspection ## How does the classic (OT) procedure work? Before the classic inspection there is a mandatory pre-check at the Hungarian Automobile Club. A slot can only be requested once the faults have been assessed there. 01 Mandate The process starts once you engage us. That is when we review the papers and the condition. 02 Pre-screening We check whether the vehicle and its papers are suitable for the classic procedure. Only then do we book a slot. 03 Pre-check at the Hungarian Automobile Club We arrange the pre-check appointment after the screening. Its fee is 29,990 Ft, payable on site. This is where the vehicle’s faults are assessed. 04 Classic-car inspection slot Once the faults are assessed we can request a classic-car inspection slot. Quick guide ## What to know before the classic-car inspection 30 years, without exception Only a vehicle over 30 years old can go for classic inspection. There is no exception — a younger vehicle cannot be classified as a museum piece. Hungarian vehicle: insurance already before the inspection A vehicle already on Hungarian papers must have classic-car motor liability cover by the time it goes to the classic inspection. Foreign vehicle: insurance after the inspection For an imported vehicle it is enough to take out classic-car cover after the inspection, before the government office visit. The inspection fee is practically the same The inspection payment barely differs between a Hungarian and a foreign vehicle. The real difference is the timing of the compulsory insurance. There is no registration tax for classics On many cars over 30 years old this saves a lot. That can make even a US car feasible — and the classic plate adds value on top.
