Two things together determine a motorcycle’s registration tax: the **power output** determines the tax base, the **time elapsed since first registration** reduces it — down to a tenth. On a 16-year-old, 10 kW motorcycle that is 4,700 Ft instead of 47,000 Ft. - **0–10 kW** — 47.000 Ft - **11–40 kW** — 94.000 Ft - **41–70 kW** — 188.000 Ft - **70 kW felett** — 235.000 Ft - **Elektromos** — 0 Ft This is the tax base, **not the tax payable** . From this, a depreciation allowance applies based on the time since first registration — 78% for a ten-year-old motorcycle, 90% above fourteen years. The official formula in three steps 1. **Tax base** by power output — the table above. For electric propulsion, 0 Ft. 2. **Months elapsed** : (year of registration − year of first registration) × 12 + (month of registration − month of first registration) + 1. Days do not count, but the starting month does. 3. **Multiplier** by the months elapsed, from 1.00 down to 0.10 — the tax payable is the base times the multiplier. Example: 0–10 kW, 18 months → 47,000 × 0.77 = **36.190 Ft** . Precise calculation with the calculator → The registration process ## How does registering a motorcycle work, step by step? 01 Purchase and documents Make sure the motorcycle meets EU requirements and that all original documents are present. The most common pitfall is a missing title or an imprecise sales contract. A motorcycle without a plate may not be used on the road. 03 Vehicle identity check Mandatory for the first Hungarian registration of an imported vehicle. For a motorcycle the fee depends on engine displacement. The certificate is valid for 60 days. 04 Technical inspection or registration If there is a valid foreign inspection and inspection report, registration administration is enough: 11,100 Ft. If not, an individual approval procedure is required, which — with the permit and the official inspection — is considerably more expensive. 05 Tax office administration Paying the registration tax and obtaining the certificate. A non-EU motorcycle also needs a customs procedure. 06 Compulsory insurance It is mandatory to obtain the plate. For a foreign motorcycle it must be taken out on the VIN, as there is no Hungarian plate yet. 07 Registry office The final stop: registration certificate, title and the new Hungarian plate. On a five-year-old motorcycle that is 53%, so the tax payable is roughly 44,000 Ft. On a 2015, 40 kW bike it is only 15,040 Ft — the age counts at least as much as the power. **Is registration tax payable on an electric motorcycle too?** No. Under the official table the tax base for an electric motorcycle is 0 Ft, so there is no registration tax to pay. **What if the foreign inspection has expired?** Then an individual approval is needed, together with an official technical examination. That costs more time and money, but it can be done. **Is a CoC needed for a motorcycle?** In most cases no, if the foreign registration certificate contains the necessary technical and emission data.
