What makes up the cost of registering a foreign car?
The cost of registration consists of six main items: the registration tax, the transfer duty, the identity check, the document fees, the number plate, and the fee of the registration or individual approval procedure. For an average five-year-old, 90 kW passenger car the basic official cost 150,000 – 210,000 Ft , depending on whether the vehicle has a valid foreign inspection.
These are basic official fees. On top come our service fee and, for a priority case, its fee.
The calculator does not give a total; it shows the basic official cost. We give the full quote by phone, tailored to your case — because which procedure and which inspection site applies is decided by the papers, the vehicle’s characteristics, the urgency and the transport needs, case by case.
How much is the registration tax in 2026?
Since 1 March 2025 registration tax has been calculated not on engine displacement but on power (kW) and environmental class. The 2026 starting value is 47,000 Ft, but that is not the amount payable: the vehicle’s data multiply it, and the depreciation allowance then reduces it.
For a 90 kW Euro 6 passenger car first registered in June 2021, the base amount is 70,500 Ft. After five years the depreciation allowance is 59%, so the registration tax payable 28.905 Ft.
Important change: pure electric (5E) and zero-emission (5Z) passenger cars remain exempt. Plug-in hybrids (5P) and extended-range hybrids (5N), however, have been taxable since 1 March 2025 — many calculators and articles still show zero for them.
How is the transfer duty calculated?
The duty is the vehicle’s power output (kW) multiplied by its age factor. The unit rate ranges from 300 to 950 Ft/kW: the newer and more powerful the car, the higher it is.
Example: for a 90 kW, five-year-old car, 90 × 750 = 67.500 Ft. A fully electric vehicle (5E, 5Z) is exempt from the duty.
How much does the vehicle identity check cost?
The identity check is an official fee, so it is the same everywhere. Since 1 February 2025 it depends on engine displacement.
The inspection valid for 60 days, after which it must be repeated. It is mandatory for the first Hungarian registration of an imported vehicle.
For a motorcycle up to 500 cm³ it is 20,925 Ft, above that 22,950 Ft. For trucks, buses, trailers and agricultural vehicles the fee depends on category and gross weight — the full identity-check price list here.
A conventional pedelec, which counts as a bicycle, is not a motor vehicle and so does not automatically fall among the vehicles subject to an identity check. A pedelec is not the same category as an electric moped. A higher-powered or differently built electric two-wheeler, however, may already count as a moped or a motorcycle.
How much do the documents and the plate cost?
For a bespoke or personalised plate this is considerably more — on this the licence plate replacement and prices page we explain it in detail.
How much more does it cost without a valid foreign inspection?
by 46,200 forints, for an average passenger car. It is the largest single item you can influence when buying.
All three figures are for the given procedure total from the authority’s 2026 fee table — they are not to be added together. For a fully electric passenger car the full inspection is 47,700 Ft, for all-wheel drive 64,000 Ft.
Which of the three procedures applies is decided by the papers, the vehicle’s characteristics, the urgency and the transport needs, case by case — there is no general rule. Call us and we will tell you in a minute.
These are basic official fees. On top come our service fee and, for a priority case, its fee.
If you are choosing between two similar cars and one has a valid foreign inspection, that alone is worth nearly 50,000 Ft. Ask for the inspection report; do not rely on the advert alone.
What to remember beyond the calculation
The calculator works out the official fees. Beyond these, the following usually arise:
Frequently asked questions
Is this calculator accurate?
The calculation uses the official fees in force from 1 January 2026 and the tax authority’s registration-tax tables. It is an indicative estimate: the final amount payable is set by the official procedure and may differ if the data in the documents are different.
How do I find out the emission class?
In Hungarian papers it is in field V.9. On a foreign vehicle, look for it in the registration certificate, the CoC or the technical data sheet. Do not choose on the basis of an “Euro 6” tag in the advert — in the official procedure it is the document data that count.
Why ask for displacement if the registration tax is based on kW?
Because the identity check fee is still set in bands based on engine displacement.
Is it payable for an electric car too?
No registration tax and no transfer duty. The cost of the documents, the plate and the identity check still arises, though — around 47,000 Ft in total, plus the registration procedure.
A plug-in hibrid mentes?
No. Since 1 March 2025, plug-in hybrids (5P) and extended-range hybrids (5N) also pay registration tax and transfer duty. Since September 2024 a new PHEV cannot even get a green plate — anyone who already has one may use it until 30 November 2026, after which it must be changed to white at a government office at their own cost (16,605–18,060 Ft).
How long does full registration take?
With valid foreign papers and a priority slot, as little as one day. With missing papers or a lapsed inspection it can take weeks. Booking the slot is the bottleneck.
Would you rather not queue?
The calculator shows what it costs. If you would rather not trek round the tax office, the identity-check station and the government office, leave it to us: from handing over the foreign papers to the new Hungarian plate, we handle everything.
