Registering and licensing a car from Germany
Full Hungarian administration for a vehicle imported from Germany. We tell you what it costs, which papers you need and how long it takes.
What to watch out for when importing a German car
Having the Fahrzeugbrief (Teil II) is critical — without it the Hungarian authority may refuse to issue the plate. Ask for the TÜV report too: with a valid German inspection, registration is 11,100 Ft; without it an individual approval procedure is needed, at 57,300 Ft. Germany is an EU member, so there is no customs procedure, but registration tax and transfer duty are payable just the same.

Frequently asked questions about cars from Germany
What is a Fahrzeugbrief and why is it critical?
The Fahrzeugbrief (Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil II) is the German title, which proves ownership. If it is missing, the Hungarian authority may refuse to issue the plate. Always ask for the original before buying — a copy is not enough.
Is the TÜV enough, or is a Hungarian inspection needed too?
If the valid TÜV inspection can be documented, registration administration is enough (11,100 Ft). If the TÜV has lapsed or there is no inspection report, an individual approval procedure and an official technical inspection are required, totalling 57,300 Ft.
How long does registering a German car take?
With complete German papers and a priority slot, as little as one day. The bottleneck is the inspection slot.
Is a CoC needed for a German car?
In most cases no, because the German registration certificate contains the necessary technical and emission data. For electric and hybrid vehicles it is needed, though.
Do you bring home a car bought in Germany?
Yes. We can bring it on a trailer, with a German Kurzzeitkennzeichen or a Hungarian transit plate. We help with the purchase too: we have agreements with several European auction sites.
