How much does registering a foreign car cost?
The exact amount varies from vehicle to vehicle: it depends on the type and drivetrain, the engine power, the year and the date of first registration, the environmental class, and on whether the vehicle currently has a valid inspection. The four weightiest factors:

What to check before you buy
The second part of the foreign registration certificate. If it is missing, the Hungarian authority may refuse to issue the plate, and origin verification is needed — 14,715 Ft and several weeks.
A date in the registration papers is not enough. With Austria and Italy the expiry is often unclear — in that case the authority requires a new inspection.
The VIN and the seller’s details must match the documents letter for letter. One typo and the whole file bounces back.
It should not be under a foreign bank loan or Hungarian public debt. We check this in advance as part of our import service.
The emission class is the basis of the registration tax. Within the same kW band, the wrong class makes a difference of between 47,000 and 1,128,000 Ft.

How long does the whole process take?
With complete papers and a priority slot, as little as one day. In the official queue the inspection slot is 2–3 months — that is the bottleneck.
Is customs duty payable on an EU car?
No. There is no customs procedure from an EU member state. Registration tax and transfer duty are still payable. From outside the EU there is — on that, we have a separate page.
How do I bring it home without a plate?
On a trailer, with a temporary foreign plate or a Hungarian transit plate. We handle all three; transport is priced individually.
Do you need a CoC?
For an EU import usually not, if the foreign registration certificate contains all the technical and emission data. For electric and hybrid vehicles, yes.
When should I take out the insurance?
You do not have to take it out — arranging the liability and comprehensive cover is part of the service and we do it. Our company is a broker. We send you a table along with the appointment, you reply to it, and we conclude the policy at the right moment. This matters professionally because the policy is taken out on the chassis number, immediately before the government-office administration: if someone takes it out too early and no plate follows, the insurer may cancel it within a week.
