Registering and licensing a car from Russia
Full Hungarian administration for a vehicle imported from Russia. We tell you what it costs, which papers you need and how long it takes.
What to watch out for when importing a Russian car
Russia is not an EU member, so both a customs procedure and origin verification are required. Beyond that, EU sanctions restrictions also affect vehicles imported from Russia, so every such case requires prior consultation and individual assessment — we cannot give a template price for it. The documents are the ПТС (title) and the СТС (registration certificate).
Which documents are needed for a car imported from Russia?
- bilingual sales contract or original invoice
- the owner’s personal documents
- for a company, a company extract and specimen signature
A downloadable bilingual contract template. No certified translation needed.
Is customs duty payable?
Yes, and on top of that the sanctions restrictions have to be examined. Russia is not an EU member, so both a customs procedure and origin verification are needed — but before starting the case, it must be established whether importing that vehicle is permitted at all.
That is why we do not quote on a Russian case without a phone consultation. Send us the vehicle data and photos of the papers and we will tell you whether there is a viable route — and if there is not, we will say so honestly.
How much does it cost to register a car from Russia?
For a Russian case we give no price range: because of the sanctions restrictions, the first thing to establish is whether the vehicle can be imported at all. Send us the vehicle data and photos of the papers, and our adviser will handle the case individually.
How does it work?
Send us the vehicle details and photos of the ПТС and the СТС. First we clarify whether it can be imported at all; only then do we discuss costs.
Customs and origin verification
For this country the registration fee alone is not the whole picture, because it does not include the customs procedure. In a dutiable case the burden is 39.7% (customs duty and VAT together), and the official fee for origin verification is 14.715 Ft. The fee for the customs procedure depends on the details of the case; we can go through it precisely by phone.
EU sanctions restrictions apply to vehicles imported from Russia. We can therefore only start a case once we have established in advance that importing that particular vehicle is permitted — which is an individual assessment in every case.
Frequently asked questions about cars from Russia
Can a Russian car be imported at all?
This is a matter of individual assessment in every case: EU sanctions restrictions apply to vehicles imported from Russia. Send us the data and we will tell you whether there is a viable route.
What are the ПТС and the СТС?
The ПТС is the vehicle title, proving ownership and the vehicle data; the СТС is the registration certificate kept in the car. Both are needed in the original.
Why there is no price list for Russian cases
Because the procedure and the steps needed differ from case to case. Quoting a range would be misleading — we price individually once we have seen the documents.
How long does a Russian case take?
We do not estimate it in advance. The first step is to clarify whether the vehicle can be imported at all; only then can we responsibly discuss timing.
Bringing home a car from Russia?
Send us photos of the documents and we will give a fixed quote within 24 hours.
