Customs clearance and origin verification
For a vehicle imported from outside the EU, the registration price alone is not the full picture: a customs procedure and origin verification are also needed. Here you will find what costs what and how long each takes.
Why is the lead time long? Not because of customs.
We handle the customs quickly. The lead time is extended by the origin verification extends it while the foreign authority replies — 30–60 days. That is not up to us.
These are basic official fees. On top come our service fee and, for a priority case, its fee.
Country-by-country rules
Not every non-EU country is the same. These rules decide whether the vehicle can be imported at all, and by which route.
If not duty-exempt: only above EU6b. If duty-exempt: any category.
It can be anything — there is no category limit.
No origin verification is needed.
The same logic as for the UK/Swiss case: a customs procedure and origin verification.
An export de-registration certificate is required.
Single-document countries — there is no separate vehicle title.
Do not try to calculate it: contact us and we will tell you the route in your case.
From a third country: a two-step route
Cars from a third country must first be registered in another EU country — to the Czech Republic or Germany —, and only then can we work with it here. The exception is anyone granted a C-01 returning-resident customs and VAT exemption.
We handle first European registration in Germany and the Czech Republic from EUR 2,500.
Customs exemption for returning residents
Indicative conditions — we do not promise exemption; that is for the authority to decide.
- at least 12 months of continuous normal residence outside the EU customs territory
- the vehicle was in your possession AND use for at least 6 months at the previous residence
- the import within 12 months of transferring normal residence
- a vehicle released into free circulation duty-free cannot be transferred for 12 months
- it does not apply to trucks or commercial transport equipment
USA, Canada, Dubai: do not try to calculate it
Get in touch and we will tell you what the route is in your case. These cases are always individually priced — as a reference point, a US inspection is never below EUR 1,000.
Frequently asked questions
How much are the customs duty and VAT together?
In a dutiable case the burden is 39.7%. Whether a case is dutiable depends on the vehicle’s origin, its age and the legal basis of the import.
How long does the customs procedure take?
We handle the customs quickly. The lead time is extended by the origin verification while the foreign authority replies: 30–60 days. That is not up to us.
How much does origin verification cost?
The official fee is 14,715 Ft and our service fee is 29,990 Ft. A vehicle from Norway needs no origin verification.
How much does the customs procedure itself cost?
It depends on the details: the vehicle’s value, its category and the legal basis of the import. We can give exact information by phone, once we know the data.
Can any car be imported from England?
No. If the case is not duty-exempt, only a vehicle above EU6b can be imported. If it is exempt, any category. From Switzerland there is no such limit.
