What to watch out for when importing a Belgian car
Belgium is an EU member; there is no customs procedure. The Belgian speciality is the Car-Pass: the official odometer history, which must be handed over when a used car is sold in Belgium — the best protection against a clocked odometer, so always ask for it. The registration certificate is issued in Dutch or French depending on the region; either is acceptable for registration, but a bilingual sales contract is expected here too.

Is customs duty payable?
No. Belgium is an EU member, so there is no customs procedure. Registration tax and transfer duty are still payable, though.
The Car-Pass is not an official requirement in the Hungarian procedure, but it is the strongest tool for a pre-purchase check: it itemises the mileage readings recorded at Belgian inspections.
How much does it cost to register a car from Belgium?

What is a Car-Pass?
The official Belgian odometer history, which the seller is obliged to hand over when selling a used car. It itemises the mileage readings recorded at inspections and workshops.
Is it a problem if the registration certificate is in French, not Dutch?
No. In Belgium the language depends on the region and the Hungarian authority accepts both — what matters is the bilingual contract and a complete set of documents.
Is the Belgian inspection enough?
If it is valid, the registration procedure (11,100 Ft) is enough. If it has expired or there is no inspection report, an individual approval is needed — 57,300 Ft in total.
How long does registering a Belgian car take?
