What to watch out for when importing a Portuguese car
Portugal is an EU member; there is no customs procedure. The document is the Documento Único Automóvel (DUA), which since 2010 has combined the former registration certificate (livrete) and title (título de registo de propriedade) on a single sheet. The technical inspection is the IPO. On an older vehicle the old two-document system may still apply — in that case both papers are needed.
Which documents are needed for a car imported from Portugal?

Is customs duty payable?
No. Portugal is an EU member, so there is no customs procedure. Registration tax and transfer duty are still payable, though.
The Portuguese IPO inspection report also records the odometer reading, so it is a good source for a pre-purchase check. If the IPO has lapsed, an individual approval procedure and an official technical inspection are required in Hungary.
How much does it cost to register a car from Portugal?
For an average 90 kW, five-year-old passenger car the basic official cost 150,000 – 210,000 Ft , depending on whether there is a valid foreign inspection.

What is a DUA?
The Documento Único Automóvel: since 2010 this is the only Portuguese vehicle document, serving as both registration certificate and title.
What if the car still has a livrete?
Then, under the old system, the livrete and the título de registo de propriedade are needed together — ask for both in the original.
Is the Portuguese IPO inspection enough?
If it is valid and you have the inspection report, the registration procedure is enough. If expired, an individual approval is needed.
How long does registering a Portuguese car take?
