What to watch out for when importing a Finnish car
Finland is an EU member; there is no customs procedure. The document is the Rekisteröintitodistus, in parts I and II. With a Finnish car two things are worth checking separately: underbody corrosion from winter salting, and what the vehicle’s equipment (studded winter tyres, engine block heater) means for Hungarian use. The Finnish katsastus (technical inspection) is thorough and its report contains a lot of useful data.
Which documents are needed for a car imported from Finland?

Is customs duty payable?
No. Finland is an EU member, so there is no customs procedure. Registration tax and transfer duty are still payable, though.
The Finnish katsastus report is detailed: it contains the measured braking force, the odometer reading and the fault list. Before buying, it is the best technical source on the vehicle.
How much does it cost to register a car from Finland?
For an average 90 kW, five-year-old passenger car the basic official cost 150,000 – 210,000 Ft , depending on whether there is a valid foreign inspection.

Frequently asked questions about cars from Finland
Is corrosion not a problem on a Finnish car?
Not inevitable, but because of winter road salt it is worth having the underbody checked before you buy. Corrosion can be grounds for failing the Hungarian inspection.
What about studded winter tyres?
Studded tyres may not be used on Hungarian roads, so they must be changed before the inspection. This is not an obstacle to registration, just something to budget for.
Is the Finnish katsastus enough?
If it is valid and you have the inspection report, the registration procedure is enough. If expired, an individual approval is needed.
How long does registering a Finnish car take?
