Registering and licensing a car from the USA
Full Hungarian administration for a vehicle imported from the USA. We tell you what it costs, which papers you need and how long it takes.
What to watch out for when importing an American car
The USA is not an EU member, so a customs procedure is mandatory. There is no CoC for an American vehicle — it only exists for European models and cannot be obtained later. Cars from third countries must first be registered by us in another EU country (the Czech Republic or Germany), and only then can we work with them at home. The document system differs by state: the Title and the Registration may be separate documents, or combined in some states.
Which documents are needed for a car imported from the USA?
- bilingual sales contract or original invoice
- the owner’s personal documents
- for a company, a company extract and specimen signature
A downloadable bilingual contract template. No certified translation needed.
Is customs duty payable?
Yes. The USA is not an EU member, so a customs procedure is required and VAT arises alongside the duty. In a dutiable case the burden is 39.7% (duty and VAT together).
Cars from third countries must first be registered by us in another EU country — the Czech Republic or Germany — and only then can we work with them at home. The exception is anyone granted a C-01 returning-resident duty and VAT exemption. We undertake first European registration in Germany and the Czech Republic from EUR 2,500.
How much does it cost to register a car from the USA?
Always individually priced, depending on the exact details. As a reference point, a US inspection is never below EUR 1,000. Send us the vehicle documents and photos, and our adviser will handle the case individually.
How does it work?
Send over the vehicle’s documents and photos of the vehicle, and our adviser will handle the case individually. This is a complex process; a template approach does not work for it.
Customs and origin verification
For this country the registration fee alone is not the whole picture, because it does not include the customs procedure. In a dutiable case the burden is 39.7% (customs duty and VAT together), and the official fee for origin verification is 14.715 Ft. The fee for the customs procedure depends on the details of the case; we can go through it precisely by phone.
On lead time the distinction matters: the 30–60 day wait for origin verification applies to directly imported, third-country vehicles. Anyone taking the German or Czech registration route does not incur it — after German or Czech papers, the procedure is identical to registering any vehicle imported from there with a valid inspection.
Three separate things everyone confuses
In US and Canadian cases nearly every misunderstanding comes from taking three different procedures for one. They follow each other but do not replace each other:
This is the most common misunderstanding. The fact that a car has been cleared through customs does not automatically earn it a Hungarian plate. Customs clearance is about the vehicle entering free circulation in the EU in customs terms; Hungarian registration is a separate official procedure with its own technical and documentation requirements.
The five steps
An American or Canadian vehicle is not registered directly in Hungary. The route always runs through Germany or the Czech Republic — this is the DE/CZ detour, and for the USA/Canada it is always required.
USA / Canada ↓ transport to Europe ↓ customs clearance Germany or the Czech Republic ↓ required technical modifications ↓ German or Czech registration German / Czech registration certificate + plate ↓ Hungary ↓ registration Hungarian registration certificate + Hungarian plate
The German/Czech step is not a foreign roadworthiness test
Here precise wording matters most. The German or Czech stage is not an inspection taken abroad. The vehicle is genuinely entered in the register: it gets a German or Czech registration certificate and plate.
From then on the vehicle arrives in Hungary as one lawfully registered in an EEA member state — and that is what brings the whole case back to the normal track.
A vehicle cleared through customs in Germany or the Czech Republic does not thereby have German or Czech registration papers. Clearance and entry in the register are two separate procedures — Hungarian registration needs the second one too.
After the DE/CZ step everything is the same
From here on the procedure is identical to registering a German- or Czech-registered vehicle with a valid inspection. There is no separate American track and no extra round of authorities.
What follows from this: the 30–60 day wait for origin verification does not affect vehicles arriving via the DE/CZ route. It applies to vehicles imported directly from third countries. Anyone taking the German or Czech registration route does not incur this wait.
First registration in Europe
We also undertake the DE/CZ step: first European registration in Germany or the Czech Republic from EUR 2,500. This is exactly the stage described above — not an inspection but genuine entry in the register, with German or Czech papers and plates.
There is no CoC for American or Canadian vehicles
The certificate of conformity (CoC) is tied to European type approval. A vehicle built for the North American market was not made under European type approval, so there is no CoC for it and none can be obtained later.
This is not an obstacle, only a different route: registration requires different technical documentation and a different official procedure — which is exactly what German or Czech registration solves.
What modifications may be needed
The North American version differs from the European one in several respects. The exact list depends on the vehicle, but these usually come up:
- lighting — the US lamp layout and beam pattern differ from the European requirement
- colour and position of side marker lights and indicators
- rear fog lamp
- speedometer — the US dashboard is in mph (the Canadian one is usually metric, in km/h)
- proof of emission and noise requirements
For a Canadian vehicle the speedometer question usually falls away, as the dashboard is metric anyway. The other points still stand.
Which documents are needed
- Title (USA) or Certificate of Title / Ownership (Canada) — proves ownership
- Registration (USA) or Vehicle Registration (Canada) — proves the right to keep it on the road
- Bill of Sale or original invoice
- proof of payment supporting the customs value
- proof of the customs duty paid (customs decision)
- the owner’s personal documents; for a company, a company extract and specimen signature
The document system differs by state in the USA and by province in Canada. Always ask for the original title document, not just the registration.
Returning resident from the USA or Canada
The returning-resident duty and VAT exemption can also apply to North American vehicles. It is also an exception to the two-stage route: with a C-01 returning-resident exemption the vehicle need not first be registered in another EU country.
The technical requirements still stand, though: customs exemption releases you from the payment obligation, not from the Hungarian technical rules.
Anyone moving home from outside the EU customs territory may, under certain conditions, import their own vehicle free of duty and VAT. Four separate conditions, three separate periods — and they must never be conflated:
- at least 12 months of continuous normal residence outside the EU customs territory
- the vehicle was in your possession AND use for at least 6 months at the previous residence
- the import within 12 months of transferring normal residence
- a vehicle released into free circulation duty-free cannot be transferred for 12 months
- it does not apply to trucks or commercial transport equipment
The exemption is determined by the authority, not by us — the detailed conditions, the circumstances examined by the tax authority and the legislation cited are on the returning-resident pillar page.
Customs and VAT exemption for returning residents — details →The returning-resident duty exemption applies to personal property. It is not available for commercial means of transport — and what counts is not the vehicle’s everyday name but its purpose, design and use. For dual-purpose vehicles also used for commercial or professional purposes, the import VAT exemption may likewise be ruled out.
A vehicle released duty-free into free circulation may not, for 12 months. If you sell, lend, rent out or pledge it during that time, the duty and VAT become payable retrospectively.
How much does it cost?
An American or Canadian case is individually priced — there is no usable range for it, and the calculator gives no total either. There are too many variables: the vehicle’s condition, the scope of conversions needed, the customs value, transport and the DE/CZ stage.
As a reference point, a US inspection is never below EUR 1,000. First European registration can be undertaken from EUR 2,500.
Send us the VIN and the documents — before you buy
From the 17-character VIN and photos of the papers we can tell you before you buy what lies ahead: whether duty is payable, whether conversion is needed, and what the expected total cost of getting it on the road in Hungary is. Asked afterwards, it is a far more expensive question.
Frequently asked questions about cars from the USA
Is there a CoC for an American car?
There is none. A CoC only exists for models with European type approval built for the European market — it cannot be obtained for a US version. That is why registering an American vehicle requires different technical documentation and a different official procedure.
What is the difference between the Title and the Registration?
The Title proves ownership, the Registration the right to keep it on the road. Whether they are separate or combined varies by state.
Does an American car need customs clearance?
Yes — the USA is not an EU member, so a customs procedure and VAT arise. In a dutiable case the burden is 39.7% — a simplified example, not a fixed figure.
Is Hungarian origin verification needed after German or Czech registration?
Not as a separate procedure. After German or Czech registration the process is exactly the same as for a German- or Czech-registered vehicle with a valid inspection. The 30–60 day wait for origin verification applies to directly imported, third-country vehicles.
How much does registering an American car cost?
Always individually priced, depending on the exact data — there is no usable range. As a reference point, a US inspection cannot be expected to cost under EUR 1,000 either. Send us the documents and the photos, and our adviser will deal with it personally.
Can an American car become a classic?
Yes. With the paid customs decision in hand, a US vehicle can come in its original state too — without lamp or other conversions. Origin verification has to be carried out, and once the result is in we can start the process. With classic status there is no registration tax, which can mean a lot of money.
