What is a CoC document?

The CoC (Certificate of Conformity) is a document issued by the vehicle’s manufacturer. It certifies that the vehicle meets the technical requirements of the vehicle type approved in the European Union. It is not a mere technical data sheet: it matters for registration, licensing and sale abroad alike.

A CoC can be obtained for every passenger car and light commercial vehicle, up to 3.5 tonnes gross weight — provided the vehicle was built for the European market.

Who needs it?
When registering an electric or hybrid vehicle
The authorities require it, and it is essential for a green plate.
When registering a new vehicle
For a new vehicle the CoC is the basic proof of type conformity.
When registering a Hungarian vehicle abroad
On export, the foreign authority requires it.
For priority, fast-track registration
Having it speeds up the procedure.

What data does it contain?

chassis number (VIN) manufacturer and vehicle type EU type-approval number engine data, power output fuel type emission classification CO₂ emissions kerb weight maximum permissible gross weight axle loads vehicle dimensions permitted tyre and wheel sizes noise and emission values other type-approval data

Which cars will never have a CoC

  • Cars from the USA
  • Vehicles from Dubai and the United Arab Emirates
  • other models built for non-European markets
  • certain older vehicles — especially those built before the current European type-approval system was introduced

These can be registered in Hungary, but it requires different technical documentation and a different official procedure.

Selling your car abroad?

In many European countries the buyer or the local authority asks for the certificate of conformity. Before selling a Hungarian-registered car abroad it is worth checking whether the CoC exists, and if it has been lost, arranging a replacement before the sale.

On import

When buying a foreign car it is always worth asking the seller whether the original CoC is available. If it is not, that is not necessarily a problem — the first thing to establish is whether a CoC can be issued at all for that VIN, and if so, how it can be replaced.

Frequently asked questions

How soon will I get it?

Electronically 1–2 days, on paper 1–2 weeks, subject to the manufacturer’s approval.

How much is it in total?

Service fee 39,990 Ft, plus the manufacturer’s own fee, typically EUR 100–180.

What if the manufacturer refuses to issue it?

In that case we refund the full amount paid.

Can a CoC be obtained for an American car too?

No. There is no CoC for American and third-country vehicles — it only exists for models with European type approval built for the European market, and it cannot be obtained later. That is why a CoC cannot be ordered in the shop for a US version. Registering such a vehicle is possible, just with different documentation and a different official procedure.

Is a Japanese, Korean or Chinese brand a problem?

Not in itself. If the vehicle was built for the European market and has proper EU type approval, a CoC can exist for it — regardless of where the manufacturer is based. What rules it out is a version built for the USA, Dubai / the UAE or another non-EU market.

Is a CoC needed for registration?

Not in every case. If the vehicle comes from the EU and the foreign registration certificate contains all technical and environmental data, it is generally not required for registration. For electric and hybrid vehicles, and for non-EU imports, it is.

For which vehicles can it be obtained?

For every passenger car and light commercial vehicle, up to 3.5 tonnes gross weight.

A CoC is primarily available for vehicles with European type approval. That a brand is American, Japanese, Korean or Chinese is not in itself a problem — if the vehicle was built for the European market and has proper EU type approval, a CoC can exist for it. For versions built for the USA, Dubai / the UAE or other non-EU markets, a European CoC is generally not available.

Cannot find your car’s brand? Send us the 17-character VIN and we will check whether a CoC can be ordered for that vehicle.
