What to watch out for when importing an Austrian car

The Typenschein is the equivalent of the title — without it registration can stall. On the Austrian registration certificate (Zulassungsschein) the inspection expiry date is often ambiguous, so the Hungarian authority then prescribes its own inspection, even if the Austrian §57a sticker looks valid on paper. Austria is an EU member; there is no customs procedure.

IMPORTANT
Typenschein
The equivalent of the vehicle title, in the form of a type certificate.
COMMON MISTAKE
Expiry of the §57a sticker
If it is unclear, a Hungarian authority inspection is needed — do not rely on the sticker.
NO CUSTOMS DUTY

Registration tax and transfer duty do apply, though.

Is customs duty payable?

No. Austria is an EU member, so there is no customs procedure. Registration tax and transfer duty are still payable, though.

The Austrian registration certificate does not always give the environmental class in the same format as the Hungarian field V.9 — in that case the calculator’s “I don’t know” option helps estimate from the Euro number.

V.9

On the second page of the Hungarian registration certificate, the V.9 field. For a foreign vehicle, look for it in the CoC or on the technical data sheet.

So what is the Euro class? We estimate from it.
! This is an estimate. Within the same kW band the wrong class can mean a 24-fold difference, so the final quote needs the document data.
Supplementary official examinations

These come on top of the procedure fee above, depending on the vehicle’s build.

Frequently asked questions about cars from Austria

What is a Typenschein?

The Austrian equivalent of the vehicle title, proving the type data and the owner. Without it registration cannot start.

Why is a Hungarian inspection sometimes needed despite a valid §57a sticker?

Because the Hungarian authority wants the date in the document clearly legible — if it is disputed or blurred, they re-test to be safe.

How long does registering an Austrian car take?

With complete papers and a priority slot, as little as one day.

Is a CoC needed for an Austrian car?

In most cases no, if the Zulassungsschein contains the necessary technical data. For electric and hybrid vehicles, yes.
