What to watch out for when importing a Dutch car

The Netherlands is an EU member; there is no customs procedure. The Dutch kentekenbewijs (registration certificate) is a single card that also takes on the role of the title — there is no separate Fahrzeugbrief-style document. The bilingual sales contract is key here too, because a Dutch invoice alone is rarely detailed enough for the Hungarian registry office.

Is customs duty payable?

No. The Netherlands is an EU member, so there is no customs procedure. Registration tax and transfer duty are still payable, though.

With the Netherlands an export de-registration certificate is required — without it the case stalls, so ask for it at the time of purchase. It also matters that the Dutch BPM (the local registration tax) is refunded to the seller on export — this does not affect the Hungarian administration, but it is worth knowing that the seller factors it into the price negotiation.

How much does it cost to register a car from the Netherlands?

For an average 90 kW, five-year-old passenger car the basic official cost 150,000 – 210,000 Ft , depending on whether there is a valid foreign inspection.
