What to watch out for when importing a Danish car
Denmark is an EU member; there is no customs procedure. Danish car prices are distorted by the high Danish registration tax (registreringsafgift) — on export part of it can be reclaimed (eksportgodtgørelse), and this is often part of the bargaining. Clarify with the seller whether it is included in the price. The document is the Registreringsattest, in two parts.

Is customs duty payable?
No. Denmark is an EU member, so there is no customs procedure. Hungarian registration tax and transfer duty must still be paid, though — and that has nothing to do with the Danish registration tax.
The cycle of the Danish syn (technical inspection) differs from the Hungarian one, so a vehicle often appears to be “without inspection” on paper — in that case an individual approval procedure and an official technical inspection are required in Hungary.
How much does it cost to register a car from Denmark?
For an average 90 kW, five-year-old passenger car the basic official cost 150,000 – 210,000 Ft , depending on whether there is a valid foreign inspection.

Frequently asked questions about cars from Denmark
Why are Danish cars so expensive?
Because Danish registration tax is among the highest in Europe and is built into the price of a used car. On export part of it can be reclaimed, which is worth making part of the bargaining.
Can I reclaim the Danish registration tax?
The eksportgodtgørelse is claimed from the Danish authority under Danish rules, usually by the seller or a Danish agent. It has no bearing on the Hungarian procedure.
Is the Danish syn inspection enough?
If it is valid and the inspection report is available, the registration procedure is enough. If not, an individual approval is needed.
