Registering an electric or hybrid car
Green plates, CoC procurement and claiming the exemptions.
A plug-in hybrid is not exempt from registration tax
Since 1 March 2025, plug-in hybrids (5P) and extended-range hybrids (5N) also pay registration tax and transfer duty. Only pure electric (5E) and zero-emission (5Z) vehicles are exempt.
a difference of 257,525 Ft between two vehicles of the same power registered in the same year. Today only pure electric vehicles get a green plate — for new plug-in hybrids that entitlement ended in September 2024, so the official technical inspection is at full price too, and there is no exemption from the tax or the duty.
Important for plug-in hybrids: Since September 2024 a new plug-in hybrid can no longer get a green plate. Those who already have one, until 30 November 2026 may still use it — after that it must be replaced with a white one at a government office, at the owner’s cost.
There are two options:
- New plate number — 18,060 Ft (plate 11,475 + registration certificate 6,000 + sticker 585 Ft), in one visit: you hand in the old one and take the new one straight away.
- Keeping the current number — 16,605 Ft, but in two visits: production takes up to 2 weeks; until then the old plate stays with you and is handed in with the new one.
Parking benefits end with the change. Vehicle tax and company-car tax exemption, however, depend not on the colour of the plate but on the vehicle’s environmental class — that can remain after the change.
A plain hybrid falls into environmental class 1 in the registration-tax table, so it is calculated at the most favourable base amount — but it is not exempt and does not get a green plate. Our calculator treats these three cases separately.
Here the CoC is not optional
For electric and hybrid vehicles the authority requires the CoC, because it shows the range, the CO2 figure and the environmental class. It is also the basis for issuing a green plate.
If you do not have it, we obtain it from the manufacturer: 1–2 days electronically, 1–2 weeks on paper. Service fee 39,990 Ft + VAT; the manufacturer’s cost is typically EUR 100–180.

The exemption covers only the registration tax and the duty. The documents, the plate and the identity check still apply.
On top of this comes the authority procedure fee: for an electric passenger car, registration is 11,100 Ft, registration + inspection 28,200 Ft, and the full technical inspection 47,700 Ft. All three figures are the total for that procedure — they are not to be added up.

How do I know whether my vehicle is 5E, 5P or 5N?
From field V.9 of the Hungarian registration certificate. For a foreign vehicle, from the CoC. If it is unclear, send us a photo of the document — we will tell you, because the difference runs to hundreds of thousands of forints.
Where does the electric discount show up in the inspection fee?
Only for the full technical inspection. In the 2026 authority table, registration + inspection for a passenger car is 28,200 Ft — for petrol and electric alike; there is no discount there. The full technical inspection, however, is 47,700 Ft instead of 57,300 Ft for electric, and 54,400 instead of 64,000 Ft for all-wheel drive.
Is the identity check mandatory for electric cars too?
Yes, for the first Hungarian registration of every imported vehicle. For a fully electric car it falls into the lowest band: 22,950 Ft.
Why does the calculator ask for displacement on an electric vehicle?
You do not need to enter it — for a fully electric vehicle the system automatically applies the 22,950 Ft band. The field matters for hybrids and combustion vehicles.
Can an imported used EV get a green plate?
Yes — the classification depends on the vehicle type, not on the model year or whether it is new. The CoC proves the entitlement.
What is your service fee for this category?
49,990 Ft, with full-service administration. This includes applying for the green plate, claiming the exemptions and liaising with the manufacturer over the CoC.
Can a plug-in hybrid bought today still get a green plate?
No; since September 2024 a new PHEV cannot get a green plate. Anyone who already has one may use it until 30 November 2026 — after that it must be changed to white at a government office at their own cost: 18,060 Ft with a new registration mark (one visit), or 16,605 Ft keeping the current mark (two visits, as manufacturing can take up to two weeks).
