Registering and licensing a car from Italy
Full Hungarian administration for a vehicle imported from Italy. We tell you what it costs, which papers you need and how long it takes.
What to watch out for when importing an Italian car
Italy is an EU member; there is no customs procedure. The registration certificate is the carta di circolazione, but ownership is proven by the Certificato di Proprietà, which has been digital (CDPD) since 2015 — instead of paper, the visura obtained from the PRA register is the proof. Because of this, checking that an Italian car is free of encumbrances (outstanding loans, liens) is especially important.
Which documents are needed for a car imported from Italy?
- bilingual sales contract or original invoice
- the owner’s personal documents
- for a company, a company extract and specimen signature
A downloadable bilingual contract template. No certified translation needed.
Is customs duty payable?
No. Italy is an EU member, so there is no customs procedure. Registration tax and transfer duty are still payable, though.
In an Italian sale, authentication of the signature (autentica di firma) and de-registration for export (radiazione per esportazione) are the usual practice. These are not Hungarian requirements, but they keep the paperwork clean — it is worth insisting on them.

Frequently asked questions about cars from Italy
Where is the Italian vehicle title?
Not in the classic sense: ownership is proven by the Certificato di Proprietà, which has been digital since 2015. Instead of paper, the visura from the PRA register is the proof.
How do I check that there is no lien on the car?
From the PRA visura, which the seller can obtain. It shows the registered owner and any lien or loan.
Is the radiazione per esportazione needed?
The Hungarian authority does not require it, but it makes things clean: it removes the vehicle from the Italian register, so no active entry is left there.
How long does registering an Italian car take?
With complete papers and a priority slot, as little as one day. Obtaining the Italian papers may take longer.
