What to watch out for when importing an Estonian car
Estonia is an EU member; there is no customs procedure. The document is the Registreerimistunnistus, in parts A and B. The Estonian market is heavily import-based: many cars came earlier from Germany, the Netherlands or Scandinavia — so checking the date of first registration and the history is especially important here, because that determines the depreciation of the Hungarian registration tax.
Which documents are needed for a car imported from Estonia?

Is customs duty payable?
No. Estonia is an EU member, so there is no customs procedure. Registration tax and transfer duty are still payable, though.
The depreciation of the Hungarian registration tax follows the date of first registration, not the Estonian one. If the two differ, the earlier date shown in the Estonian papers is the basis.
How much does it cost to register a car from Estonia?
For an average 90 kW, five-year-old passenger car the basic official cost 150,000 – 210,000 Ft , depending on whether there is a valid foreign inspection.

Why the history of an Estonian car matters
Because the Estonian market lives largely on imports: the vehicle was often first registered in another country. The depreciation of the Hungarian registration tax follows that original date.
Do the Estonian documents need translation?
Official documents follow a uniform EU format and usually need no translation. The sales contract, however, must be bilingual or officially translated.
Is the Estonian inspection enough?
If it is valid and provable, the registration procedure is enough. If expired, an individual approval and an official technical examination are needed.
