What to watch out for when importing a Latvian car
Latvia is an EU member; there is no customs procedure. The document is the Reģistrācijas apliecība (registration certificate), which also proves ownership. West European and North American imports are common on the Baltic market — with the latter the vehicle may not be a European version, which makes the Hungarian procedure substantially more expensive. So always have the VIN checked before buying.
Which documents are needed for a car imported from Latvia?

Is customs duty payable?
No, if the vehicle is already in free circulation in the EU: Latvia is an EU member, so there is no customs procedure for a car in free circulation. Registration tax and transfer duty must still be paid, though.
If the vehicle is a North American import and not a European version, the procedure takes a different course: there is no CoC and technical registration is individual. In that case call us before you buy.

Frequently asked questions about cars from Latvia
How do I know whether a Latvian car is a US import?
From the first characters of the VIN: 1, 4 and 5 mean US-built, 2 means Canadian. Send us the VIN and we will check before you buy.
Is there a separate Latvian vehicle title?
There is none. The Reģistrācijas apliecība serves as both the registration certificate and the proof of ownership.
Is the Latvian inspection enough?
If it is valid and provable, the registration procedure is enough. If expired, an individual approval and an official technical examination are needed.
